All clogged drains in a home are individually irritating and nauseating. If this drain is a shower drain, it gets even more irritating because there will be clumped hair and soap residue blocking the drains. Also, since showers are moist places most of the time, mold can easily grow on top of these debris if it’s not cleaned properly. Getting rid of mold is very hard to do, so it’s important for homeowners to know how to maintain their showers and address clogs in the drains. You can clear out your shower drain in a few different ways.

What To Do Before Starting

Before you start with any procedure, allow as much water to drain away as you can. Then wear a plastic glove, remove the stoppers, and clear any visible debris, soap residue, as well as hair from the area. Afterwards, look inside the drain to see if similar material is also there and remove them. After this step, there are a few methods you can try out.

Drain Snake Method

If you do not already of a drain snake, you can get one easily from any store. If the drain is obstructed with the classic hair-coated soap debris you cannot get rid of, using a drain snake is a good option. At this point, you will already have the cover removed from the previous step. Now, insert the snake by removing the drain cover. As you’re pushing the snake, you’ll feel a resisting component at some point, which means you've hit the blockage. At this point, you need to keep rotating the snake in order to get rid of the clog. After some point, you will stop feeling the resistance, which means the clog is removed. You can pull the snake back and make sure to let water run for a few minutes.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Another method you can try is the mixture of vinegar and baking soda. You can actually use this mixture for your other drains as well. First, pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain; afterwards, pour 1 cup of vinegar. Give it time to sit for 15 to 30 minutes so that the buildup can be broken down. This mixture is particularly effective for soap scum. After letting it wear, you can rinse the drain with boiling water to get rid of the rest of the loose particles.

Plunger

A plunger is a classic, tried-and-true method many homeowners use for drain cleaning in Magnolia Center. The situation is no different when it comes to shower drains. First, remove the drain cover. Afterwards, you need to run some water that will cover the plunger cup's bottom to create a seal. Then, move the plunger up and down. This method can be effective as a minor clogged drain cleaning.
